Research interests
My research interests are primarily in the field of perceptual dialectology. Perceptual dialectology uses various methods to help further understanding of non-linguists perceptions of language variation. My specific interest within the field is methodological approaches to the study of perceptions.
My research has focussed on locations in the north of England and southern Scotland, and has discussed the role of (real and imagined) borders in perception. More information about my project dealing with the perceptual effect of the Scottish-English border can be found here.
I am also interested in the wider field of folk linguistics and language attitudes research, that is to say, how linguistically 'naive' participants respond to language, and the reasons behind these responses.
My research has investigated ways of integrating techniques used in the field of Geographical Science with those used in the study of language variation and perception, with a particular focus on the possibilities offered by GIS technologies. In addition to my research in perceptual dialectology, I am also generally interested in sociolinguistic and dialectological methodologies, and language variation and change.
